Tips on Moving
Moving Is More Than Packing Up the House
You're moving!
Review this checklist and make your move easier:
- Notify the post office of your new address and arrange for mail to be forwarded. Cancel or transfer subscriptions to newspapers and magazines.
- Segregate your belongings according to goods to be moved versus items to be stored.
- Obtain doctor's certificates for prescription medications, when moving out of state or abroad.
- Keep important papers together so they are easily accessible during the moving process. You may be asked to present key documents to open new accounts, register for schools, obtain driving licenses, etc. Such original documents may include: birth certificates, marriage license, insurance information, school transcripts, titles to automobiles.
- Notify utility companies in your destination location of your move-in date so you will have electricity, telephone service and water/sewer/garbage collection services upon arrival.
- Transfer or close bank accounts.
- Make arrangements for transportation of your pets and plants.
- Make arrangements for van lines - 30 days prior to packing.
